Need something to tide you over before Wicked part two? Well, there's hours of new Wicked footage coming our way, which is almost as good as getting the whole thing!

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo gave us everything and more in Wicked, but the smash hit movie only covered the first act of the Broadway show (despite having the same run time as the entire stage show combined). Thankfully, the two films were shot together, so fans only have to wait a year between halves of the story. Keep reading to find out everything we know about the thrilling conclusion to the tale.

When will Wicked part two be released?

The release date is currently scheduled for November 21, 2025.

What is the second part named?

Don't call it a sequel. It's the second half of a continuous story, and a post from the stars and director Jon M Chu revealed that it will be called Wicked: For Good, a reference to the final, climactic song.

Are there new songs?

Definitely. When it was first announced that Wicked would become Wickeds, fans of the musical were quick to point out that while the first act certainly has enough ballads, love songs, duets, group numbers to sustain a movie soundtrack, the second…kind of doesn't. Sure, there are reprises and a couple of bangers ("No Good Deed," “As Long As You're Mine,” “Thank Goodness”), but compared to the first act, there's just not as much musical material. Which is why composer Stephen Schwartz is adding two new songs to For Good.

And now, we have confirmation that Cynthia Erivo tried her hand at composition as well! She revealed that she collaborated with Schwartz on a secret new song, saying, "I don't know if you're ready for it. I mean, I love the song and I remember when we filmed it, the cast and crew were crying. So I don't know. And I don't know if that's just because they were emotional that day or that's what the song does."

"I feel like the song is very, very special. I don't want to give you any more than that," the Tony winner added, teasing, “I have a feeling that even the title will move you.” Presumably, this is an Elphaba song, as that's Erivo's character, but the actor also confirmed that audiences can look forward to a new Glinda number as well.

Why was Wicked split into two parts?

Director Jon M Chu said that by the time he signed onto the project (the movie was long, long, long in development), splitting the story was already a possibility. “When I walked in, everyone was already in high-octane mode of debating: Do we need to do this in two movies? Other scripts that were trying to fit it into one movie were stripping many songs and changing the story in ways that didn’t quite make logical, emotional sense. You can get away with that on stage, but movie audiences are tougher,” he told Variety. “As we picked apart every script, I would ask certain questions that opened a lot of discussion. It became inevitable that we had to commit to two movies.”

Also, the second half will, like in the show, be darker than the first. "There's a lot of soul searching in movie 2," Chu told Entertainment Weekly. "They're asking, 'Is this the right decision that you made?'"

Still, it won't be the full 180 of, say, Into The Woods. "There is lots of lightness in the movie," Chu continued. "There's a lot of fun parts. We've not forgotten about that, but there's a matureness and a nuance to it that we earn from the first movie. The second movie really gets to play with [that maturity]."

Who is in the Wicked part two cast?

The cast we know and love from part one will be appearing, including Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba), Ariana Grande (Glinda), Michelle Yeoh (Madame Morrible), Jeff Goldblum (the Wizard of Oz), Jonathan Bailey (Fiyero), Ethan Slater (Boq), Marissa Bode (Nessarose), Peter Dinklage (voice of Doctor Dillamond), Bowen Yang, and Bronwyn James.

There were also cameos from some of the stage show's stars and creative team, and some of us are maybe hoping for more of that in For Good. Is a Norbert Leo Butz role too much to ask for? Or Joel Grey?

What about Dorothy?

Well, Chu was very, very vague about whether we'll meet her at all. He told Variety, “The Wizard of Oz is potentially a dream. It’s a world where there are no real stakes. Knowing that Elphaba and Glinda live in a world of real stakes, we had to reestablish with the audience that this was real,” which I disagree with (TWoO has stakes!), but okay. In the first part, we did glimpse Dorothy and her friends from behind during the opening (most of Wicked is, technically, a flashback), and Chu says we'll check back in with the gang.

“We dropped everyone into the crime scene, maybe the most famous crime scene ever in cinema and literature, of the iconic hat in the puddle,” Chu said. “There are all these little clues before we see the full landscape of Oz. It’s this living, breathing place with real cultures, so we immediately establish this is not a dream world. After we go somewhere over the rainbow, we see that those four iconic characters exist in this real world. And we will revisit those characters in movie two.”

“In the show, Dorothy is around,” he added. “They have to intersect, and you can only tease it so much. I won’t say whether she’s a character, necessarily, in movie two. There’s a part of me that wants everyone’s Dorothy to be the whatever Dorothy they want. And yet there is interaction and some crossover. So I’ll leave that up to part two.” Hmm!

For context, Dorothy is shown in silhouette in the stage show. But she does have a more active role in the Gregory Maguire novel on which this whole shebang is based, so if the movie wanted to cast someone as Dorothy and make a thing of it, there's precedent.
