Have we met?

Have we met?

A while back, we volunteered to foster a little beagle named McCoy. Because we are not allowed to keep dogs in our rental house, our experience was for 10 days only. We did have the approval of our landlord, especially when he was told this little guy had less than a day to get rescued before he would be killed.

I have always like dogs and was happy to have McCoy join us for a short time. I was amazed at how much my staff loved him. It was a sad day when we took him to another long-term care foster home. My staff just plain fell in love with him.

The best way Blog for Change and honor pet foster parents is to present this poem, author unknown, but it says it all -

Dear Foster Mom

There I sat, alone and afraid.
You got a call and came right to my aid.
You bundled me up with blankets and love.
And, when I needed it most, you gave me a hug.
I learned that the world was not all that scary and cold.
That sometimes there is someone to have and to hold.
You taught me what love is, you helped me to mend.
You loved me and healed me and became my first friend.
And just when I thought you’d done all you do,
There came along not one new lesson, but two.
First you said, “Sweetheart, you’re ready to go.
I’ve done all I can, and you’ve learned all I know.”
Then you bundled me up with a blanket and kiss.
Along came a new family, they even have kids!
They took me to their home, forever to stay.
At first I thought you sent me away.
Then that second lesson became perfectly clear.
No matter how far, you will always be near.
And so, Foster Mom, you know I’ve moved on.
I have a new home, with toys and a lawn.
But I’ll never forget what I learned that first day.
You never really give your fosters away.
You gave me these thoughts to remember you by.
We may never meet again, and now I know why.
You’ll remember I lived with you for a time.
I may not be yours, but you’ll always be mine.

We are very happy we had the opportunity to do what we could. There is nothing small about any help anyone can give.

Spring has sprung and a young cat’s fancy…well, you know the rest.

Ask any animal rescue organization or volunteer with a house full of discarded kittens what the real world of animal rescue is like these days. Help stop overpopulation.

Cat, kittens, dogs and puppies are in need of help. Give them a break by taking them to the nearest spay and neuter clinic. Many clinics are offering seasonal rates and discounts in order for you to help them and the growing number of homeless animals.

It’s a wonderful circle: people helping animals = people helping people to help the animals.

What if dogs were in charge and went to rescue shelters to find their humans?

The MSPCA Adoption Center in Nantucket, MA, received an email from You Scream I Scream band member Floyd to say: “We wanted to raise awareness about pet adoption and Petfinder, ’cause most of the animals in the video were found or adopted.”

This week’s email had a few surprises. First came the fun video from my friends at The Outside Joke. Then, on a more serious side, came an amazing story of a group of men in New York out to make a difference!

You can visit The Outside Joke more of their fun stuff.

On a more serious side, check out Real Men Ink – Unleashed. Find out about their extraordinary efforts to help save helpless, abused and abandoned animals. They support rescue organizations and are committed to educating the public.

“If you don’t like us from the way we look, we can’t help that. But if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem, so stay out of the way.”
