You don’t need to keep up with fall’s biggest men’s fashion trends to look good—but who are we kidding? Some fresh inspiration never hurts when you’re trying to make the most of your autumn wardrobe. This season, menswear is all about relaxed, heritage-inspired elegance: effortlessly layered preppy style, Western-minded accessories, throw-on-and-go topcoats, and lived-in sweaters and barn jackets your grandfather could have owned.

On the materials front, denim is shaping up to have a very big autumn; Canadian tuxedos are enjoying a renaissance. Meanwhile, chocolate-colored suede is popping up at Louis Vuitton and on TikTok alike, and leopard print has taken fashion insiders by storm. Ready to give your lineup a much-needed refresh? These are the fall 2024 men’s fashion trends we’re most excited to try now.

Our men’s fall fashion trends wish list

1. Denim on denim

Officine Générale, Paris Men’s Fashion Week, PradaKristy Sparow/Edward Berthelot/WWD/Getty Images

Once regarded as a fashion faux pas, the Texas tuxedo has never been cooler than it is right now. Prada, Valentino, Ami, and Officine Générale, among many other labels, all showed denim-on-denim looks for fall—and it’s already made the leap into the real world on some of Fashion Month’s most stylish attendees. While we’re all for mixing washes, the key to nailing 2024’s take on this trend is matching tops to bottoms as closely as possible; these matching pairs are a great place to start (and fit the overarching Americana vibe of the season, too).

2. Ivy League

Preps, rejoice: We are so back. Inspired by the smart, haphazard layering and pattern-mixing popularized on Ivy League campuses, some of fall’s best menswear shows gave us new ways of combining preppy pieces. Why not embrace the fall trend and throw a jacket over a sweater or a tee over a rugby shirt? And even if you don’t want to layer like a Tommy Hilfiger model, these Ivy-friendly staples look plenty sharp on their own.

3. Square sunglasses

No matter your personal feelings on The Dare, Charli XCX’s producer-turned-social media celebrity, his influence is undeniable: His trademark square sunglasses (and neckties and slim suiting, for that matter) are absolutely everywhere right now. Brands like Valentino and Tom Ford are on the same ’70s-inspired wave, showing bulky, angular sunnies alongside pencil-thin ensembles. These six picks have the exact same vibe; pull them out for sunset drinks and outdoor weddings.

4. Brown suede

Rich, chocolate-colored suede is the accent material of the season. In the form of jackets, bags, and fall shoes, the soft leather projects a sense of high-luxury ease—even if you end up dropping much less than the price of a Louis Vuitton blazer on your own suede piece. Dark brown pairs well with black, denim blue, and gray; the real challenge here is taking the proper steps to protect your investment. (Waterproofing and smart storage are essential.)

5. Coastal grandpa

Do we love the term “coastal grandpa?” No. But the TikTok trend does speak to a very real movement in menswear toward vintage-inspired pieces that feel coastal and lived-in—think barn jackets, rollneck sweaters, and pleated khakis. The real secret here is expert layering; tuck shirts underneath sweaters and belts, and let loafers poke out of baggy pants.

6. Classic neckties

Bottega Veneta, Valentino, PradaEstrop/Julien M. Hekimian/WWD/Getty Images

Nearly every menswear brand (and plenty of womenswear labels, too) showed classic neckties for fall and winter. While they once signaled conformity, today’s ties are more playful and expressive, elevating standard dress shirts and trousers into full-fledged ’fits. Start simple with a black tie or prove your fashion bona fides with a pick from Comme des Garçons. Clever styling makes neckties even cooler; try tucking it into your waistband, experimenting with a less common knot, or flinging it over your shoulder à la Bottega Veneta.

7. Leopard print

Preps, punks, and dandies can all agree on leopard print. The pattern is having a huge year on the runway, with major cosigns by Dries Van Noten, Rabanne, Isabel Marant, and Wales Bonner (the brand behind those foldover Adidas that always sell out instantly). Even if you’re a skeptic, we highly recommend giving the print a shot; it pairs exceptionally well with plain hoodies, faded jeans, and black suiting. It’s a gateway pattern, though—pretty soon, you might find yourself taking bigger fashion swings. (And yes, it’s more fun on the other side.)

8. Heritage westernwear

Willy Chavarria, Todd Snyder, Louis VuittonWWD/Estrop/Getty Images

The American West inspired many of this season’s runway shows, with labels like Louis Vuitton and Willy Chavarria showing cowboy hats, rancher blazers, turquoise belt buckles, and buffalo check. While Western homages can easily fall into costume territory, the refined pieces below will add just enough of the trend to your rotation without looking like cosplay. We suggest starting with a checked shirt and creased jeans; graduate into cords and cowboy boots when you’re fully sold on the look.

9. Sleek topcoats

Gucci, Bally, AmiDaniele Venturelli/Victor VIRGILE/Estrop/Getty Images

Every guy needs a great fall jacket, as evidenced by this season’s runways. Gucci and Bally are just the tip of the topcoat iceberg; body-skimming trenches, macs, and car coats appeared in far too many shows to count. These lookalikes start at just $129 and will fit in with the rest of your capsule wardrobe; throw on a white T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and slim loafers to look like an off-duty model.
