If you're a hair aficionado—or desperately trying to fix a botched bleach job—then the best Olaplex products might need no introduction. The hair-care brand is beloved by celebrities, top colorists and stylists, and reviewers alike, and has made a name for itself as a must-have for color-treated hair.
But despite the acclaim, there still seems to be a little confusion around what the products actually do. We'll clear things up: Unlike other hair treatments that add moisture and shine to the outer layers of damaged hair (pretty straightforward stuff), Olaplex works on the molecular level to repair the disulfide bonds that give hair its strength and break through heat-styling, color, and chemical treatments—and was the first brand to make this bond-building technology available in an at-home treatment. (The secret? A little active ingredient called bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate.)
By restoring these broken bonds, it offers lasting hair repair, which is how Olaplex came to be recommended by almost every hairstylist out there. This technology is particularly beneficial for anyone with bleached or color-treated hair, but it can also help reverse damage done from brushing, chemical processes, intense hairstyling, and environment aggressors.
While the products aren't as expensive as, say, a Dyson dryer, they're still more than your usual drugstore picks. That leads us to the obvious question: Are Olaplex products really worth the money? As a beauty-brand cynic, I find Olaplex very trustworthy—maybe because my hair salons tend to use it or because the brand doesn’t seem to feel the need to advertise the way other companies do. I have fine curly hair that’s been bleached and is regularly exposed to heat, so anything I can get that protects and sustains it is really valuable to me! Conditioner is a nonnegotiable step in my hair-care routine, so much so that I don’t feel like I’ve washed my hair properly if I don’t use conditioner. Which is why I love the No. 5 conditioner. I like that it's actually repairing my hair, instead of just adding oils to make it feel softer and shinier—which it does as well, by the way. The bottle says to leave it on for a full 10 minutes, but I usually do five since I'm impatient, and it totally does the job. Olaplex No.6 Bond Smoother worked very well on my very fine, frizzy hair. A little goes a long way, which I love with a luxury product—this little bottle will last. When I choose a purple shampoo, I do that mainly to fight the “yellowish” on my gray hair. I would say that there are many brands that do the job, and I choose those which leave the hair the least dry. I tried the Olaplex blonde-enhancing shampoo recently, and it is good against the yellow shades. For the time being, purple shampoos are great to avoid the yellow, and should be used every three or four washes.
