If you haven't added a hydrating lip mask to your nighttime routine, it's time to reconsider. I personally can't fall asleep without wearing one, and I keep multiple options on my bedside table. I'm not the only one obsessed—lip masks and lip balms have gone viral on TikTok in the past few months, with the hashtag #lipmask amassing over 1 billion views.
However, some BeautyTokers are taking things a step further and doing some research into which of their favorites are cruelty-free. There can be lots of confusion when it comes to discerning which products meet the criteria.
“Cruelty-free generally refers to products that are not tested on animals, but there are no legal definitions for this term,” Marisa Plescia, NakedPoppy research scientist and cosmetic chemist, tells Glamour. “This can cause confusion as to the meaning and standards for claiming cruelty-free. For example, some cosmetic companies may use ‘cruelty-free’ solely based on the finished cosmetic products but may still use raw materials that were once tested on animals but are not currently.”
There are some certifications that can help ensure cosmetics are cruelty-free, like Leaping Bunny and PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies program, though they're not always up to date. “Many brands forgo these formal certifications and logos,” Plescia continues, “but are still cruelty-free and claim it on their branding and rely on combinations of scientific literature, non-animal testing, raw material documentation and safety testing, or controlled human-use testing for their finished goods.”
She also notes that while some products are cruelty-free, it doesn't necessarily mean they are also vegan. “Vegan cosmetics refer to products that are made without ingredients derived from animals,” she says. “This includes ingredients like beeswax, honey, collagen, and keratin. Beauty products can be both cruelty-free and vegan if they are not tested on animals and they don’t contain any animal products.”
There is also the possibility that, while a brand is technically cruelty-free, it sells products in countries that requires animal testing—meaning that it happens abroad. “China did require that all cosmetics that were sold within its borders were tested on animals, but as of May 2021, ‘general cosmetics’ that are imported and sold in China are exempt from animal testing with the submission of some required documents,” Plescia says. “There are some exceptions to this regulation, for example with sunscreens, but overall this is a step forward.”
At the end of the day, if you do your research and still come up short of answers, your best bet is to reach out to brands directly for their animal-testing policies.
